Cryptography and ciphers

By Neo Tiong Seng, 03 Feb 2010

Summary

Cryptography is a well-established science that has been around for more than 2,000 years. It uses a cipher (secret communication) system to disguise confidential information in a way which renders its meaning to unauthorized persons. Historically, it was used in warfare, and one of them is the famous Caesar Cipher. Modern cryptography as a subject involves the disciplines of mathematics, computer science, and engineering.  A good example of how cryptography is used is in encryption for security purposes when data is being transferred from point to point by computers over wired or wireless networks.
